Icebreaking

More than 90 million tons of cargo move through the Great Lakes each year and more than $1 billion in revenues is sacrificed due to winter delays resulting from inadequate icebreaking.

Lake Carriers’ Association continues to voice concerns over the need for U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards to put more icebreaking resources in the Great Lakes and repower their current aging assets to ensure they can continue to break ice and promote economic activity.
