Jones Act

The Jones Act, Section 27, Merchant Marine Act, 1920, mandates all cargo moved between U.S. points be carried in vessels that are crewed, built and owned by Americans. The Jones Act requires all participants in domestic waterborne commerce to follow the same rules, regulations and laws and thus, the promotes competition through a level playing field.

The benefits of the Jones Act are seen economically and environmentally. The Jones Act drives 123,600 jobs, $30 billion in economic impact and guarantees vessels are built up to the world’s highest safety, environmental and operational standards.
