Great Lakes Iron Ore Trade Up 3-Plus Percent in June

CLEVELAND—Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 6.5 million tons in June, a decrease of 5.5 percent compared to May, but an increase of 3.2 percent compared to a year ago. Shipments were, however, almost 16 percent ahead of June’s 5-year average. Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 5.6 million tons, a slight increase compared to a year ago.

Included in that total were 627,000 tons shipped to Quebec City for final delivery overseas. Loadings at Canadian ports rose 15.7 percent. Through June the iron ore trade stands at 25.2 million tons, an increase of 9.2 percent compared to a year ago and 21 percent better than the 5-year average for the first half of the year.
