Great Lakes Coal Trade Down 7.3 Percent in November

CLEVELAND – Shipments of coal on the Great Lakes totaled 2.7 million tons in November, a decrease of 7.3 percent compared to a year ago, and well below – 35.2 percent – the month’s long-term average. Shipments were also 4.1 percent less than October’s tally of 2.8 million tons. Shipments from Lake Superior ports totaled 1.6 million tons, a decrease of 9.2 percent compared to a year ago. Coal transshipped from Superior, Wisconsin, to Québec City, Québec, for loading into oceangoing colliers totaled 129,000 tons. Exports to Europe from Superior total 1,504,000 tons through November. In 2012, Superior’s overseas exports for the same period totaled 1,252,000 tons.
