Maintenance & Repairs

The Great Lakes freshwater environment means a well-maintained hull can last indefinitely since corrosion is minimal. As a result, ships are constantly modernized, thus saving the environment raw materials that would be consumed by new construction.

In addition, virtually every U. S.-flag laker is a “self-unloader,” meaning the vessel is equipped so that its crew can rapidly unload cargo without any need of shoreside personnel or equipment.
