Pace of Lakes Ore Trade Brisk Again in October

CLEVELAND — Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes totaled 6.9 million tons in October, an increase of 14.7 percent compared to a year ago. The increase was even greater when compared to the month’s long-term average: 24.1 percent.

Shipments from U.S. ports rose by nearly 1 million tons, or 17.9 percent, to 6.3 million tons. The shuttle of iron ore on the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio, nearly doubled to 508,000 tons. However, overseas exports via Quebec City slowed to just one cargo, 29,875 tons.
