Lakes Limestone Trade Down in August

CLEVELAND — Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes totaled 3.7 million tons in August, a decrease of 7.7 percent from a year ago.  Limestone cargos were also below the month’s 5-year average by 4.4 percent.

Loadings from U.S. quarries totaled 2.9 million tons, a decrease of 11.1 percent compared to 2023.  Shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 809,032 tons, an increase of 7.3 percent.

Year-to-date the Lakes limestone trade stands at 17.1 million tons, with loadings from Michigan and Ohio quarries totaling 13.6 million tons and shipments from Ontario quarries totaling 3.4 million tons, all increases of less than one percent compared to a year ago.
